This book provides an introduction to the fundamentals and trade-offs of data deduplication techniques, which remove duplicate data both in storage and network systems. It also explores emerging deduplication techniques that are efficient and effective in removing duplicate data. The book explains where duplicate data originates and provides solutions for its removal. Existing deduplication techniques are classified according to the size of unit data to be compared, the place of deduplication, and the time of deduplication.
In Chapter 3, the book discusses redundancies in email servers and introduces a deduplication technique to increase reduction performance with low overhead by switching chunk-based deduplication and file-based deduplication. Chapter 4 focuses on a deduplication technique applied to cloud-storage services where unit data to be compared are in logical structured format, reducing processing time efficiently. In Chapter 5, a network deduplication technique is presented, where redundant data packets sent by clients are encoded (shrunk to small-sized payload) and decoded (restored to the original payload size) in routers or switches on the way to remote servers through the network. Finally, Chapter 6 introduces a mobile deduplication technique for images (JPEG) or video (MPEG), considering the performance and overhead of encryption algorithms for security on mobile devices.
