Charging a Battery in a Vehicle
When charging a battery in a vehicle, it is important to keep in mind that a spark near the battery may cause an explosion, and starting the vehicle with the charger connected to the AC outlet may damage the charger. Therefore, the KATBO Automatic Battery Charger is equipped with an auto-start feature that ensures that current will not be supplied to the battery clamps until a properly connected battery is detected. Also, these clamps will not spark if touched together.
To charge a battery in a vehicle, remember to:
- Turn off all the vehicle’s accessories.
- Keep the hood open.
- Clean the battery terminals.
- Place the charger on a dry, non-flammable surface.
- Lay the AC/DC cables away from any fan blades, belts, pulleys, and other moving parts.
- For a negative-ground vehicle (as in most vehicles), connect the charger’s positive (red) clamp to the positive (POS, P, +) battery post and connect the charger’s negative (black) clamp to the vehicle chassis or engine block, away from the battery.
- For a positive-ground vehicle, connect the charger’s negative (black) clamp to the negative (NEG, N, -) battery post and connect the charger’s positive (red) clamp to the vehicle chassis or engine block away from the battery. Never connect any clamps to the carburetor, fuel lines, or sheet-metal body parts.
- Connect the charger to an electrical outlet.
- When charging is complete, disconnect the charger from the AC power, remove the clamps from the vehicle’s chassis, and then remove the clamp from the battery terminal.
Charging a Battery Outside of the Vehicle
To charge a battery outside of the vehicle, follow these steps:
- Place the battery in a well-ventilated area.
- Clean the battery terminals.
- Connect the positive (red) clamp to the positive (POS, P, +) battery post.
- Position yourself and the “negative post extension” cable as far away from the battery as possible, and connect the negative (black) clamp to the cable’s free end.
- Connect the charger to the electrical outlet.
- Select the battery type and the charge rate.
- When charging is complete, disconnect the charger from the AC power, disconnect the negative clamp, and finally the positive clamp.
- A marine (boat) battery must be removed and charged on shore.
The KATBO Automatic Battery Charger provides 2A and 6A charging current matching battery and Float Charger Maintainer, making charging safe and extending battery life. With LED digital display voltage and power, automatic voltage detection for 6V or 12V battery, and the ability to achieve the highest industry standard of energy efficiency, this charger also provides overcurrent protection, overvoltage protection, overheat protection, reverse protection, and has a self-stop function.
