Unix operating system has undergone many changes since its initial release in early 1970. Today, there are many different variants of Unix systems available, with some being commercial and others being freely available. As a result, many people in India are becoming Linux enthusiasts. This book is aimed at exposing readers to Linux installations and programming and assumes that they have prior experience with an operating system such as Windows, as well as C programming.
The contents of the book were originally presented by a team of ten faculty members to 100 teachers of engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu during a short course at NRCFOSS in June 2005. This edited version is intended as an introductory level textbook on the topic, suitable for a typical one-semester course in an undergraduate program of CSE/IT.
