From the Introduction
Writing Windows 10 posed a challenge for Microsoft: creating a streamlined operating system that works on two completely different devices, touchscreen tablets, and keyboard-and-mouse computers. One requires large, easy-to-use buttons and controls, while the other can fit more onto the screen because of its precise pointing device.
Unfortunately, Microsoft’s first attempt, Windows 8, was a disaster. Two operating systems were combined, resulting in two web browsers, email programs, control panels, and ways to do everything. The majority of users found this frustrating.
Hoping to move away from the mess that was Windows 8, Microsoft omitted Windows 9 altogether, going straight to Windows 10, which accommodates both touchscreen and traditional computer users equally elegantly.
Initially, Microsoft proposed that Windows 10 would be a constantly evolving work in progress, without any large service packs. Instead, Microsoft intended to add features continuously through silent, automatic software updates.
However, Microsoft has updated Windows 10 with significant updates every six months, as it has always done in practice. Microsoft plans to continue providing such updates two times a year, which can make it challenging for those who write and edit computer books.
About This Book
Microsoft’s documentation has not improved much over the years, and Windows 10 comes without any printed guide. Finding helpful online documentation is often a challenge as it is not detailed, lacks technical depth, and examples, and can’t be marked, underlined, or read in the bathroom. Most importantly, the disorder of rapid Windows 10 releases makes it hard to know if the online article is relevant to your particular version.
This book intends to serve as the missing manual for the May 2019 update and includes step-by-step instructions for every Windows feature, including ones you may not have yet understood or mastered. It covers every version of Windows from desktop PCs to laptops to tablets.
Up to Speed sidebar articles provide introductory information for readers using Windows for the first time, while Power Users’ Clinic shaded boxes offer technical tips, tricks, and shortcuts for advanced users.
About MissingManuals
The “Missing CD” link inside the book provides readers with a chapter-by-chapter guide to the shareware and freeware mentioned in the book. Additionally, to keep the book under 3000 pages, some of the most technical Windows 10 features are explained in free PDF appendixes available for download from the same location.
The website has corrections and updates that can be accessed by clicking on the book’s title and selecting View/Submit Errata.
